Kate McConnell

Hi, I’m Kate! I’m an archaeologist who specialises in Norse (Viking) archaeology. I also have a keen interest in genealogy, place names and zooarchaeology. I graduated from Glasgow University in 2019 with a Masters degree in Celtic and Norse archaeology.

Favourite Building: I’d have to say my favourite Paisley building has got to be our amazing Abbey. The history of the site and its surrounding area is fascinating and still open to much more investigation in the future.

I was lucky enough to be part of the drain dig that took place at the Abbey in 2019. It was a great couple of weeks that showcased to the local community just how much there is to explore right here in the centre of the town!

Favourite Historical Story: My favourite story associated with paisley has got to be the sad tale of Majorie Bruce, eldest daughter of Robert the Bruce.

On riding through Gallowhill her horse was startled and she fell. Majorie was heavily pregnant at the time and was swiftly taken to the abbey where a caesarean was performed to save her baby the future Robert II of Scotland. There is a lot of conjecture surrounded the story which only makes it more interesting! On your next visit to the abbey make sure you stop and take a look at her effigy that marks the spot where she is reputed to be buried.

Wish for Paisley: My wish for Paisley is that more investment is placed into our town centre to make Paisley a destination once more. Not only for shopping and hospitality but also from a heritage perspective as well.
