Remembering Norman "Norrie" Sweeney – A Paisley Legend

Writer: Gavin DiversGavin Divers

Paisley has bid farewell to one of its most cherished sons with the passing of Norman "Norrie" Sweeney, who died peacefully on 18th February 2025, aged 90, at Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock. A devoted husband to Mary, a loving father, stepfather, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Norrie was a man whose influence extended far beyond his family, touching the lives of many through his lifelong dedication to boxing.

A Life Dedicated to Boxing and Mentorship

Norrie Sweeney was more than a boxing coach; he was an institution in Paisley. His name became synonymous with the sport, and his impact stretched well beyond the boxing ring. From an early age, Norrie displayed an unshakable passion for boxing, a passion that would shape his own life and the lives of countless young athletes who trained under his expert guidance.

His encyclopaedic knowledge of boxing was recognised on a national stage in 1962 when he appeared on the television quiz show Double Your Money. Demonstrating his remarkable expertise, he answered 32 consecutive boxing questions correctly, securing £1,000—a significant sum at the time. But rather than indulging himself, Norrie channelled his winnings into something greater: he founded a boxing club in Paisley, ensuring that future generations would have the opportunity to train, learn, and thrive in the sport he loved so dearly.

The Birth of a Legacy

For nearly five decades, Norrie’s boxing club became a cornerstone of the Paisley community, producing some of Scotland’s finest fighters while also providing local youth with a sense of purpose, discipline, and self-belief. His influence went beyond titles and trophies; it was about instilling values that would stay with his students for life.

Among those who trained under Norrie’s mentorship were some of Scotland’s most respected fighters, including:

  • Kevin McIntyre – British Welterweight Champion, who credited much of his success to Norrie’s guidance.

  • Kris Carslaw – British Light-Middleweight title contender who greatly benefited from Norrie’s wisdom and experience.

  • Michael Deveney – British Featherweight Champion, another fighter who thrived under Norrie’s tutelage.

  • Danny Quigg, Dave Haggerty, and Stephen Russell – Talented professionals whose skills, discipline, and determination were shaped by Norrie’s unwavering belief in their potential.

While these names gained national recognition, there were countless others who walked through the doors of his gym and emerged not just as better fighters, but as better individuals.

A True Gentleman and Mentor

For those who had the privilege of knowing him, Norrie was more than a coach; he was a mentor, a father figure, and a friend. His gym was a sanctuary for many young people, a place where they could hone their skills, build confidence, and receive invaluable life guidance.

Renowned for being tough but fair, Norrie instilled discipline in his fighters while always leading with kindness and encouragement. He had an exceptional ability to bring out the best in people, pushing them beyond their perceived limits and helping them realise their true potential.

His contributions to boxing were recognised not just in Paisley but across Scotland and beyond. The respect he commanded within the boxing community was immense, and his legacy will forever be tied to the success of Scottish boxing.

A Final Farewell

Norrie’s funeral service took place on Thursday, 13th March 2025, at Holmsford Bridge Crematorium in Dreghorn, Irvine. The large gathering was a testament to the profound impact he had on so many lives. Family, friends, former students, and members of the boxing community came together to honour and celebrate his remarkable life, sharing stories of his journey and the influence he had on those fortunate enough to know him.

Though sadness filled the air, there was also a deep appreciation for a life lived with purpose and dedication—a life that truly made a difference. His loss is deeply felt, but his legacy remains, carried forward by the countless people he inspired over the years.

A Legacy That Will Never Fade

Paisley has lost a legend, but Norrie Sweeney’s influence will never fade. His name will continue to be spoken with admiration, his lessons passed down through generations, and his spirit will forever be present in the gyms, the rings, and the hearts of those he mentored.

As we say goodbye to a true icon, we remember not just the coach but the man—his kindness, his wisdom, and his unwavering dedication to his community. His gloves may be hung up, but his fight lives on in every person he inspired.

Rest in peace, Norrie. You will never be forgotten.
